Hide AdOffences include illegally cropping a dog’s ears and abusing puppies and kittens.
“As a dog owner myself, I am absolutely delighted to see this vital new act come into law,” said Ms Davies.
She said the sentences are some of the toughest in Europe, which will ensure that punishments reflect the severity of the crimes and deter animal abusers.
Offenders can also receive an unlimited fine.
“This law is a huge step forward for animal welfare in the UK,” said the RSPCA’s chief executive Chris Sherwood.
“Tougher sentences will act as a stronger deterrent to potential animal abusers and will help us in our aim to stamp out animal cruelty once and for all.”
