Hide AdBut Crowley was back in the No1 spot in the next, the 888sport.com Stakes, on 2/1 favourite Brittleton - which was a first-ever Goodwood win for Harry sunlop, son of John, who is something of a legend in these parts.
The meeting kicked off with Cam Hardie taking the Nyetimber Apprentice Handicap on 5/1 chance Pettochside for Hampshire trainer Chris Gordon.
Mark Johnston is never far from success when he comes to Goodwood and he was there to see his three-year-old Assault On Rome carried to victory by Franny Norton in the Breeders Backing Racing EBF Fillies’ Stakes after going off at 7/1.
William Carson took the last, the Butlins Stakes, on Live Dangerously (12/1), making it another Hampshire handler, this time John Bridger, celebrating.

Hide AdThere was plenty to entertain aside from the racing, including some spectacular fireworks, live music, free fun fair rides and a beach with traditional English seaside-resort-style refreshments.
Butlins Redcoats helped the holiday feel along as families enjoyed good weather to start the bank holiday weekend.
The festival continues on Saturday and Sunday and tickets are available on the day for both meetings - they start at £10.
Saturday’s highlight is the Group 2 Doom Bar Celebration mile.
